UI patent and trademark librarians, Donna Hanson and Karen Hertel, created the Historical Idaho Patents Database. Sireesha Besetti, a UI student, assisted in looking through print indexes and entering data into the database. Library Network Analyst, Bill Kerr, provided invaluable support by designing the database.

The goals of the project are twofold--to collect in one spot a database of Idaho patenting history and to provide an electronic index of early Idaho patents. The image files of patents back to 1790 are available through the USPTO website; however, patents prior to 1976 can only be accessed by patent number or patent classification. The Idaho Historical Patents Database allows searching by inventor, assignee, city, title, patent number, or date.

Database coverage is currently 1866-1908 (no patents were issued to Idahonians in 1868 and 1874) and 1928. The database is very much a work in progress, with patents being added continuously.

If you find errors in the database please contact Karen Hertel (karenh@uidaho.edu). Inventor names were entered as they appeared on the source data and may be misspelled. City misspellings were corrected.

The source data for the Idaho Historical Patents Database is listed here.
